The album cover for A Warm Cup of Assholes by Ben John Smith & Michael James Christian needs to be addressed before we go any further. It’s brilliant, absurd, hilarious and seems like it would right at home at http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com. It only makes sense the cover would be indicative of what you would expect from that album. Thankfully for your ears, it delivers. A Warm Cup of Assholes might be offensive to some as it often unapologetically talks about shitting, wanking and sex. You have been warned. The album starts off with a track called “Kiwi Fruit” which revolves around a piano and atmospheric pads.Smith recites lines about an excessive menstrual cycle and towards the end repeats the word “cunt”. I was by myself but it still made me feel uncomfortable. If you want to make a party awkward just put this track on repeat. The second track “Broke Spine” made me tickled pink in the right way. It starts with the lines “I get really stressed that Kim Kardashian might not get along with Beyoncé and maybe her and Jay Z feel awkward about it” .“Broke Spine 2” contains hypnotic,repetitive sounds that feel like it might put you in a trance as Smith recites lines about his sister’s google history and falling down the stairs. On “DMV” Smith examines his anxiety-ridden inner dialogue as he waits in line while “Honest Liar” depicts a man who can longer partake in his favorite pastime due to being on Prozac. From a musical perspective “Handed” was one of the highlights. It’s a bit funky and implements a number of “cheesy” synths that make it feel fun and light. “The Shoot” speeds up in tempo as Smith goes into detail about a sexual act. Cover your ears children. A Warm Cup of Assholes is sometimes funny but almost always engaging in some way. I can’t imagine busting these tracks out on repeat but more like something you play for your friends to catch their reaction.
