Balance Lost is a duo from the UK and Little Signs is their second EP release. Sound found within this four-track EP is incredibly varied and is a true ode to the possibilities of modern-day music, which is the defiance of one genre by the usage of many. There are sounds of synth pop, retro electro and classic pop from the ‘80s.

The opening track “Little Signs feat. Expendable Friend” starts off with a hip-hop beat that is accentuated by a wavering pop-synth effect. This plus the addition of Expendable Friend’s English accent make this song so dynamic in regards to musical culture. Toward the end, the repetition of “how do people fall in love with each other” becomes really catchy and it is quite easy to see yourself singing along to the lyrics.

“Balance Lost” again starts off with a sweet hip-hop beat that is then layered with a somewhat contemplative guitar rhythm that makes the song a bit more serious. Soon the vocals add yet another layer, and as the song goes on the “seriousness” becomes apparent as do the lyrics, “so goodbye, it’s good to have known you, but I don’t believe we’re going to see you on the other side... and I hope I am wrong,” show us the song is about an ending relationship. Yet there is still optimism woven into the song as “I hope I am wrong," is accentuated throughout the chorus.

The entire album was recorded and mixed in the duo’s very own self-built studio and having released three full-length albums in the past means they definitely have experience with music production. The sound is crisp and comes over clearly. This collection of songs is quite fun to listen to and each song has its own story to tell that is genuine and heartfelt giving listeners a good dose of both sweet happiness and stark reality.
