These Good Days Last is solo-artist John Cain’s first debut album and Aware of the Bear is packed with twelve alternative rock songs with a genuine American rock appeal that anyone into the classics will thoroughly enjoy. Cain is based out of Canada and the musician crafts his unique sound from a variety of genres, which results in a dynamic and well-cultured sound that never bores and always has something new and interesting to offer up to anyone listening. After playing in bands for many years, Cain decided to try out making music on his own. This is where his songwriting style was born and These Good Days Last was written over the last year and half. The opening track on the album gives us a taste of this musician’s upbeat rock sounds. “Let it Grow,” starts off with quintessential rock and roll vibes and is filled with lyrics and a nice drum pattern to hold onto throughout. While listening to the lyrics, we begin to understand what the song is all about, “Contentment settles like dust in the attic of my mind, comfort is a sickness that leads to pain.” The song is somewhat dismal yet very uplifting and inspiring at the same time; “Trees sing in low whispers so that I must raise my head, I’m blinded by the Sun, who is my enemy… Let it grow.” The second song “Madly,” is much different and seduces you into its smooth and silky vibes right from the very beginning. Again this song is filled with a long story characterized by metaphors and mini-poems. "I went to the edge of the forest to dream, now I wondered, am I madly in love with you?” The guitar on this track is sophisticated and the incorporation of the “ooo, ahhh, ooo,” in the background of the song makes this track very compelling and catchy. It seems like a perfect song for a long, romantic cross-country road trip. These Good Days Last is truly an album for music lovers that also enjoy literature. Every song is so textured with pleasant lyrics and harmonizing vocals that tell a beautiful story or morals that make the entire album very entertaining.
