Brothers Trevor and Taylor Parrish are Awake The Atlantic. The duo recently released What May Have Been, which harks back to bands such as Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie.

The duo recorded and mixed their EP and the results are quite impressive. You can tell within the first song that the band took their time and knew what they were doing when it came to the production and sound quality. To boot the songs are quite well written and well delivered.

They kick things off with “This isn't Home” which starts with the melancholy hum of an organ. Drums and piano enter into mix and give the song a sense of hope and perseverance. The lyrics are poignant as he sings, “Was a time when I called this home/feels so foreign that I’m alone/I don’t know if I can stay.” It isn’t until the end of the song where the band starts to rock out a bit and builds to a climax. Good stuff.

Up next is “Fear” which opens with an ominous sounding pad and piano. The song certainly sounds similar to Death Cab for Cutie and the singer even sounds like Ben Gibbard. That being said the vocal melody is extremely catchy and memorable. The duo continues to have success with “Ink” which is has a slightly dark vibe when it comes to music but is juxtaposed by the vocal melody. 

“Figure it Out” has a different feel from the songs that came before. It ditches the pads and instead revolves around acoustic guitar which gives the song a less atmospheric feel. They close with “Wall Of Light” which is a solid closer which is arguably the most upbeat song on the EP.

What May Have Been isn’t perfect but it is definitely a solid start and builds a foundation for the duo. The production was good overall but I think there were still some tweaks here and there that could have improved the experience even more. I’m pretty sure the band will be back at it soon releasing more material and I am looking forward to seeing how they evolve.
