Aureus is a three-piece band comprised of Callum Bevan (drums), Jason Tremain (bass) and Will Tremain (guitar/vocals) that recently released Relic. The young band who are all in their early twenties play straight forward rock music that is a bare bones style grunge that has been floating around for over twenty years now. Their songs revolve around basic chords and melodies that are so recognizable that it is hard to pinpoint it to a single source. Local H, Three Doors Down and copious other bands who sound similar are the type of vibe this band has.

Anyone who knows anything about music knows that bands that are a three-piece have their work cut out for them. If the guitarist is also singing it often makes sense for the guitarist to just play power chords. Time and time we again we see bands overcoming this because of the delivery. Nirvana and The White Stripes are two prime examples. As of right now Aureus isn’t in the same league as either of those bands but there are occasional pockets of potential I heard within the five songs. 

Will Tremain wrote these songs when he was nineteen years. The topic and feelings expressed on the songs are something you would expect from someone within that age bracket; Anger, confusion, loneliness and sadness, which all in some way come back to women in his life. Although I’m almost twice as old as Tremain some of the topics he sings about still hold true for someone at any age. That being said, the emotional intensity that a teenager feels from life’s trial and tribulations from the opposite sex starts to wane with every passing year.

Tremain’s lyrics lay on the surface and don’t require any analysis or scrutiny. Lines like “Do you need me? Do I need to ask you to stay? Well I can't see what's right and I miss my time I don't want to throw it away again” and “How many times must I say That I don't want to need you anymore” are examples of this.

Aureus isn’t a bad band but there also isn’t much here that stays with you. If they hope to make more of an imprint they will need to dig deep and figure out what makes them stick out from the crowd.
