The four-piece band Asteroids formed about a year ago and recently released an introductory EP of three songs to give you an idea of what to expect from them in the future. Their self-titled EP Asteroids is straightforward indie rock which shows some potential from a band that still is looking for a niche sound. The EP is a complete DIY effort and has about the sound quality of a demo. Even though the recording quality isn’t something you would expect from a professional studio the songs still are good enough for you to know if this is a band that you will checking back with to see if they have evolved.

They kick things off with “When The Sun Burns Out” which is a high-energy song that revolves around distorted guitars, bass, drums and vocals. There is an early Pavement vibe as the band slows things down and the lyrics also reminded me of something you might hear from Stephen Malkmus. I was reminded of Pavement at times but more so of the band Cloud Nothings. If you have heard Cloud Nothings before there are definitely similarities during the verse.

The next song “Man on TV” is a standard indie rock. “Man on TV” follows a loose narrative. The vocalist sings, “The man on TV built a shelter from rain and he stayed up in there until the sun it came.” I thought the lyrics were well thought out. One of the band's best moments come about a minute-twenty seconds into the song. The guitars coalesce over inventive riffs while the rest of the band works with a subdued energy.

The last song “Plastic Song” is another solid track. It has the most infectious vocal melody and falls somewhere between Weezer and Pavement. The vocalist delivers another round of decent lyrics that avoid clichés and tropes. 

Asteroids are going to need more than luck to have an impact in such an oversaturated market. This EP showcases an average indie rock that isn’t doing anything that hasn’t been done countless times before. With only three songs the band fits into a category of “wait and see.” If they can utilize the strength they already possess with some other unexpected tricks and elements they could be on to something.
