There is a good chance you have already heard of Airport Impressions. If you haven’t it’s time to get on board the ship. The four-piece band comprised of Errol Sammut, Johann Schembri, Chris Curmi and Steve Farrugia have toured relentlessly, have built a formidable fan base and not too long ago released their sophomore effort entitled Mariette.
The album sounds huge in a number of ways. One thing that helped in achieving this is the amazing production and impressive performances. In some way I was reminded of the cathartic, explosive way in which Mumford and Sons, Arcade Fire and even U2 sometimes feel. The music on Mariette is uniquely Airport Impressions but at the very least there is a similar energy in the air. Mariette is a very versatile and eclectic experience. Some songs veer heavy towards folk pop while others are emotionally resonant rock songs. The addition of instruments like banjo and other string instruments was an added bonus on a couple of songs. The band opens up with “Wishing Well” which is a pretty straightforward alt-country rocker. It’s a single worthy song that you can picture being played on mainstream radio. Big chorus, sing-along type lyrics and a general upbeat vibe, One of my favorites moments was the beginning of “Come Along.” It starts with string work and vocals and almost immediately builds up to immense peaks. I actually wouldn't have minded if the song was just vocals and strings. “Star Signs” is a fun song that switches from an extremely fast BPM to a slower one and back again while “While You Wait” tips its hat to U2 in a number of ways. A personal highlight was one of the slower, melancholy songs entitled “All We Got.” Mariette is a larger than life type of album that doesn’t give you many moments to relax. It’s intense, in your face and if you put this on at a get-together there isn't any way to avoid it. Suffice it to say this is an album that I think will be enjoyed by a large demographic. It really has something for everyone. Recommended
