Welcome to First Sighting, or first listening if you will of A Flying Dodo Society, a lovely couple in love creating some truly fun and unique indie alternative music. The album is filled with unsuspecting vocal clips that evoke a sense of otherworldliness; this paired with the equally unique and peculiar vocals and effects laden within the tracks on First Sighting make it a dynamic and entertaining listen. The duo, Federico Ausbury and Maira Vergara, are from Argentina and now reside in New York City. Beginning the exotic trip, “Squeaky Song To Hold Onto While Your Flight Is Delayed in Peru” is filled with eccentric vibes and I can easily imagine waiting for a flight in a hot, humid airport in the middle of a jungle or something. This is better facilitated by the vocal clips of a Spanish airport attendant and the dynamic story that is told throughout the song. The harmonization of “ba badapap pap,” embodies this song as one of those coffee shop performances where everyone is snapping their fingers. “We Ate The Sun” is also filled with a seemingly never-ending story to get lost in. The main chorus of the song is very melodic and catchy: “Take a little sunshine and you’ll see that sometimes skies that turn gray can brighten your day.” When you step back and realize that the song is only composed of a simple percussion, a guitar and harmonizing vocals, this song is truly a treasure to appreciate. This song is very visual and I imagine it as a soundtrack to indie movies from Wes Anderson or anything with warm and neutral tones. The recording style of the album seems to emulate the sound of actually seeing them playing live. This adds a unique aspect to the album and I would love to hear this album on vinyl. Throughout this collection of songs, I imagine myself on some sort of exotic journey through a new and intriguing land, I am so content and excited and not at all apprehensive or scared. The music carries a beautifully relaxing and inspiring sound that makes listening to First Sighting an event in itself.
