Earth Spun Occupants
Q: Are there are notable stylistic shifts between your first album Sun Songs & Moon Rhythms and your latest release Sober Thoughtfulness?
A: We would like to think we've expanded the spectrum of our sound since the release of our first album. I think we achieved a more eclectic sound from song to song. The general theme lyrically felt more personal, vulnerable and emotional. We delved a little more into synths, sequencing and auxiliary analog percussion.
Q: As a duo what is the creative process like for the music you play?
A: Honestly, we are still developing a process, as this project grows. For instance the process for the first album was far more "rehearsed" than the process for Sober Thoughtfulness. On Sober Thoughtfulness 80% of each song was written outside of rehearsal, and brought directly to the studio, then kind of assembled from there. From there, we were able to embellish whatever we needed to between the two of our musicalities. It was a noble experiment, but we are already making demos for each other for the next album.
Q: Can you talk about some of the themes and concepts that run through Sober Thoughtfulness?
A: Water is a big theme of the album, the state of melting, dissolving, dissociating and letting go. Finding guidance through pain, love through dissonance and being completely ok with being completely lost.
Q: I really enjoyed the banjo played by Ellis Wallace on “Complete.” Can we expect future collaboration with other instrumentalists in the future?
A: We fully plan on expanding our collaborations on the next album. Ellis will be back for a couple of songs, and we are jamming around and getting some different timbres in the mix. We have a lot of great musical friends in Kansas City that we can reach out to. There is some chance Kenny G. might appear on the next album if he is comfortable with that. All I can say is that our people are in contact with his people.
Q: Do you guys play live? And how do you accomplish a full band sound with two people if you do?
A: We do play live. Currently we play as a three-piece. Matt takes over guitar, Garrett plays the keys, and our constituent Benjamin is our adjunct drummer. We found a stray bassist a couple weeks ago. Matt says I can keep him.
Q: What can we expect from Earth Spun Occupants in 2017?
A: A third album, which is currently under production. We will most likely release some cumulative B sides, as well at some point this year. An acoustic EP. Possibly.
