If you are having a hard time getting your bass and kick drum to mesh or just want a kick that really cuts through the bass then ducking may be the way to go. 
Ducking is almost alway used in EDM to get that huge thump but also shows up on pop and rock songs. Here is a video showing you the basic principle. Once you get the idea you can get it done on any DAW.
