Cristian James Interview
Q: Can you talk about your musical history?
A: According to my mother, I’ve been singing as soon as I could talk. I attempted to play guitar when I was younger and was absolutely dreadful at it. I picked it back up about two years ago though and immediately started writing. From a young age, whenever I’d find an artist I liked, I’d have to know everything I could about them. Their personal history, the history behind their songs, the recording process etc. That knowledge has always been important to me. I love trying to find the desirability of all genres of music and try to find out why people like that certain type of music. That has lead me to have a very wide range of inspiration.
Q: What are some of the themes on 3 Brunettes 1 Blonde?
A: Girls! Haha The songs on the record reflect my life at the moment which is quite simply trying to figure out dating in the modern world.
Q: What is the songwriting process like for you?
A: Oftentimes it will start with a moment of inspiration. Whether it’s a single line that I think of or a moment of strong feeling. Most of the time it’s a sudden spark of creativity. I can write on demand but I prefer not to.

Q: Can you talk about the recording process for 3 Brunettes 1 Blonde?
A: The recording process was fantastic. The EP was produced by the talented Corey Pavlosky, who has just put out his own solo record. It was recorded in Williamsburg, Virginia. Corey and I did the majority of the record but we also had Joshua Hensley come in for harmonies and Troy Breslow, who I just recently went on tour with, come in to play a guitar solo on “40,000 Ft.”
Q: 3 Brunettes 1 Blonde contains only four songs. Are you working on a full length?
A: Yes, I currently am writing towards a full length at the moment. I feel like I learned a lot from recording this album and I look forward to taking what I learned and applying it. I’ve written a lot recently but I hope that I get the opportunity to write with Savannah Campbell (who co-wrote “40,000 Ft”) again. There’s a lot of other artists I’m also hoping to write with.
Q: What else do we need to know about Cristian James?
A: I am currently coproducing an EP for the singer/songwriter Joseph Johnson which we are very excited about. And you can keep up with what I’m up to on my instagram @cristianjamesmusic
